Courses offered:

Health Team Relations (1 Unit):
Learn your role and function as health team members. Topics include terminology, the history of health care, health care agencies, ethics, legal responsibilities, careers, holistic health, human needs, change, culture awareness, communication, medical health, leadership, and career decision-making.


Allied Health Science I: (1 Unit)
This course is designed for students who are interested in a career as a health care professional. Students are introduced to the health field, the concepts of personal, family and community health, and disease control; human behavior, the ethical and professional aspects of health occupations. communication skills, the basic sciences; anatomy; medical terminology; first aid; and career opportunities in the health field.


Allied Health Science II: (2 Units)
Students must have a C or better average in Allied Health Science to pursue CNA I.

Nursing skills will be taught in a classroom setting and in a hospital setting with actual patients. Students will learn a variety of nursing skills including but not limited to: making beds while the patient is in bed, bath patients, taking a recording patients' vital signs, moving patients or assisting patients to move or walk, and providing personal care to patients. The CNA I certification is offered but not required to complete the course.

Health Science Advanced Studies (1 unit)
This culminating course is for seniors who are career-focused in a health or medical career. The three parts of the course include a research paper, a product, and a presentation. Students demonstrate their abilities to use content and apply knowledge to real-world situations in a selected career. In addition, they will also demonstrate their abilities to write, speak, apply knowledge, problem solve, and use life skills such as time management and organization. Students work under the guidance of a teacher-facilitator in collaboration with community members, business representatives, and other school-based personnel. HOSA membership provides avenues for applying leadership skills, reinforcing writing and speaking skills, and participating in volunteer activities.

Pharmacy Technician (1 Unit) (online)
Pharmacy Tech is a computer-based course designed specifically to prepare students for national certification as a Pharmacy Technician through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Students will be eligible to take the PTCB exam after completing the course. Students learn the federal laws that affect the pharmacy industry and the role of government agencies that regulate the industry. Students study the various types of drugs, prescription types, medication dosage forms, and medical devices. Drug interactions on the body's major systems, such as the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, cardiovascular system, etc. are introduced.

Academy at Central will test students in February for the first time in Word and Excel. Students who pass will receive the Microsoft Certified Application Specialist certification.
