This page details a history of the Academy through the eyes of student achievement data. Our school report card does not tell the entire story of our school, and we feel the entire story paints a very different picture.

Part I: Where We Started (2006-2007)

•Under 15% of students pass EOC exams
•Attendance Rate was very low at 83%.
•No clubs, student council, yearbook or newsletter programs
•Over 44 students were suspended from school

The first year at the Academy was a rough one. The school got off to a poor start, and did a good job recovering to the level shown. In 2006-2007, the Academy was the one of the lowest performing high schools in North Carolina.

Part II: Growth Begins (2007-2008)

•33% of students passed their EOC exams
•Attendance Rate was 89%
•Yearbook, Newspaper, Clubs and Tutorials were offered for all students
•4 students were suspended out of school
Under the leadership of a new principal the school began to grow last year. This growth was the second highest in North Carolina among the sixty-four low performing schools.

Part III: The Growth Continues (2008-2009)

•This Year 55.8% of students passed their EOC exams, and 64% passed their VoCAT exams.
•Attendance rate is 96% (above GCS average)
•More clubs offered, including music and the Academy in Action News (TV Show)
•2 students suspended out of school

The current year has brought continued growth among our students! Attendance gains have been the best in GCS, and EOC scores are above 50% for the first time. We are excited about this and look forward to an amazing spring. A big part of our growth has been offering students activities and extra help and building those options into the school day. Below is a graph that compares the first three years of the Academy.

Data

We are proud of this growth and look to continue in the 2009-2010 school year and beyond!

Part IV: The Future of the Academy

The Academy is also offering new programs and classes to further expand its offerings for students. In Fall 2009, we will offer a complete Medical IT pathway, with four classes instead of the current two. The Academy will teach programming, which until now has only been offered at Weaver Academy in Greensboro. We look for test scores to be above 75% in 2009-2010. If you have any questions about the Academy please send an email to info@academyatcentral.com.
